Clinical Medical Assistant Career Track Program

This program is intended for students who want to prepare for an exciting, challenging and rewarding career in healthcare.  This program will train students to assist physicians by performing functions related to the clinical responsibilities of a medical office.  Instruction includes among other things preparing patients for examination and treatment, routine laboratory procedures, diagnostic testing, technical aspects of phlebotomy and the cardiac life cycle.  Students will review important topics including phlebotomy, pharmacology, the proper use and administration of medications, taking and documenting vital signs, cardiology including proper lead placements, a professional workplace behavior, ethics and the legal aspects of healthcare. This program includes 140 hours of classroom lecture and hands on labs and a clinical externship opportunity at a local healthcare provider.  To be eligible for the clinical rotation, students must successfully complete the 140 hour program, submit to a thorough background check, drug screening and meet other requirements. 

Note:  Upon successful completion of this program, students would be eligible to sit for the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) national examination.

Medical Administrative Assistant Career Track Program

This 50-hour course prepares students to function effectively in many of the administrative and clerical positions in the health care industry. Medical Administrative Assistants, Medical Secretary, and Medical Records Clerk, are all positions in great demand. This Program covers important background information on the medical assisting professional and interpersonal skills, medical ethics and law, medical terminology, basics of insurance billing and coding, telephone techniques, scheduling appointments, medical records management, and management of practice finances. This program is intended to provide students with a well-rounded introduction to medical administration so that a student can gain the necessary skills required to obtain a medical administrative assistant position in the health care field.  After successful completion of the program, students could be qualified to sit for the Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) national examination that is administered through the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).

Medical Billing and Coding Career Track Program

This combined 80-hour billing and coding course offers the skills needed to solve insurance billing problems, how to manually file claims (using the CPT and ICD - 9 manual), complete common insurance forms, trace delinquent claims, appeal denied claims and use generic forms to streamline billing procedures.  The course covers the following areas:  CPT (Introduction, Guidelines, Evaluation and Management), specialty fields (such as surgery, radiology, and laboratory), ICD - 9 (Introduction and Guidelines) and basic claims processes for medical insurance and third party reimbursements.  Students will learn how to find the service and codes using manuals (CPT, ICD - 9, and HCPCS). After obtaining the practical work experience (6 months to 2 years), student who complete the course could be qualified to sit for the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) – Certified Professional Coder Exam (CPC or CPC-H Apprentice); the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) Certified Coding Associate (CCA) exam, and/or other national certification exams.

Pharmacy Technician Career Track Program

Class size is limited to 20 participants

This comprehensive program will prepare students to work as a pharmacy technician in a retail or other pharmacy setting and to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board’s PTCB exam. Course content includes pharmacy medical terminology, the history of pharmacy, the pharmacy practice in multiple environments, pharmacy calculations and measurements, reading and interpreting prescriptions and defining drugs by generic and brand names.  Through classroom lecture and hands on labs, students will review dosage calculations, drug classifications, the "top 200 drugs", I.V. flow rates, sterile compounding, dose conversions, aseptic techniques, the handling of sterile products, total parental nutrition (TPN), dispensing of prescriptions, inventory control and billing and reimbursement.

phlebotomyPhlebotomy 

Registration now open for the May, 2015 Class  

Limited to 36 participants

Phlebotomists are ambassadors of the clinical laboratory who, for many patients or clients, are the primary lab personnel with whom they have contact. Responsibilities include the collection of blood specimens by venipuncture and accurate electronic logging of specimens into the clinical lab information system.  This course will be a combination of weekly labs and supporting textbook.  The two-hour labs will be held on Fridays in the Health Sciences building on the Decatur campus.  Students will receive hands-on training in a clinical-like setting in our state-of-the-art lab.  This is an eight-week-long course.

The Phlebotomy Enrollment Process is the following:
Potential students fills out and submits the CWS registration form
The first 36 registrants will receive an email inviting them to a Phlebotomy Enrollment Session

Registrants must RSVP/confirm their attendance for the Enrollment Session
Potential students attend the enrollment session and complete the following:
 - Sign required paperwork
 - Select class times (based on when registration form was received and attendance at Enrollment Session)
 - Order Scrubs
 - Pay the class fee

If the first 36 students do not attend the Enrollment Session, students will continue to be invited to Enrollment Sessions until the class has reached 36 paid students.

Students must attend and complete the Enrollment Session in order to be accepted into the program

Class is limited to 36 total students, 12 in each class time

EKG Technician Career Track Program

Class size is limited to 20 students

This comprehensive 50 hour EKG Technician Certification Program prepares students to function as EKG Technicians and to take the American Society of Phlebotomy Technician (ASPT) – Electrocardiograph (EKG) Technician exam and other National Certification Exams. This course will include important practice and background information on anatomy and physiology, medical disease processes, medical terminology, medical ethics, legal aspects of patient contact, electrocardiography and stress testing.  Additionally, students will practice with EKG equipment and perform hands on labs including introduction to the function and proper use of the EKG machine, the normal anatomy of the chest wall for proper lead placement, 12-lead placement and other clinical practices.
