About Workforce Development

Workforce Development's (WD) mission is to help students, parents, business, education, and government make the connection between education and career. Calhoun WD's service area includes Lawrence, Limestone, and Morgan counties of North Alabama.


Workforce Development Critical Success Factors:
  • Quality programs as evaluated by participants and/or their leadership.
  • Sound effective resource management of WD and TechPrep grant resources.
  • Established and maintained working relationships with business, government, education, parents, and students that contribute to the accomplishment of the WD mission.
  • Effective internal and external marketing.


    Defining Characteristics of WD:
  • Increases awareness among students and parents of career information and needs.
  • Increases participation and cooperation among educators and business people to benefit students and, ultimately, lead to a better-educated and more productive workforce.
  • Facilitates educators' own action plans for increasing sustainable career-oriented learning tools and methods.
  • Facilitates sustainable business interest and participation in education.


    Affects of Workforce Development:
  • Increases awareness among students and parents of career information and needs.
  • Increases participation and cooperation among educators and business people to benefit students and, ultimately, lead to a better-educated and more productive workforce.
  • Facilitates educators' use of career and workplace oriented learning tools and methods.
  • Facilitates sustainable business interest and participation in education.


    Building Partnerships with Businesses:
    Workforce Development works to build partnerships with local businesses. There are many ways in which businesses can get involved. Business people can help prepare students for the work world by volunteering to:
  • Be a classroom speaker.
  • Share with students displays, printed materials, and audiovisual materials.
  • Speak at Career Day or participate in a Job Fair.
  • Participate in curriculum development and enhancement.
  • Host a tour of the business for student field trips.
  • Host a student in a job shadowing experience.
  • Host a student in an unpaid internship or youth apprenticeship program.
  • Host a teacher in an unpaid internship.


    Providing Direct Assistance To Schools:
    Workforce Development also provides assistance directly to schools by:
  • Organizing in-service training, academies, and other professional development opportunities for educators, business and community representatives.
  • Awarding grant monies to schools and community partnerships committed to school-to-career system building.
  • Providing information via the Consortium's website.
