Upward Bound Participants 2006-2007

Upward Bound is a federally funded program designed to encourage high school students to complete their secondary education and pursue higher education. Eighty-five high school students from Lawrence County are selected to participate in this program.

Upward Bound provides support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. The program provides opportunities for high school students to succeed in academic performance and ultimately in higher education efforts. Upward Bound serves students attending public high schools in the Lawrence County area. The target population includes students from families demonstrating economic need and/or students from households in which neither parent holds a bachelors degree. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rates at which participants enroll in and graduate from colleges or universities.

All students receive:

  • academic guidance and counseling on a year-round basis
  • individual & group tutoring at their high school
  • a 6-week summer enrichment camp at Calhoun Community College while residing on a college campus
  • assistance in career and college planning
  • assistance with college and financial aid applications
  • college visitations & field trips
  • monetary awards for successful tutoring participation and academic performance
