Shakespeare's play Twelfth Night sailed to the never-never land of Illyria, where nothing is as it seems. Identical
twins Viola and Sebastian, separated in a shipwreck and thinking the other has drowned, wash up
from the sea into this magical kingdom of mistaken identity, love madness,
and a host of zany characters. The last of Shakespeare's comedies,
Twelfth Night is a hilarious, spirited tale about the bewildering ecstasies of love.
The audience entered to see the deck
of a ship, with Viola and Sebastian on board and a host of sailors singing.
When the lights came up, a storm struck, during which the ship was
transformed into Illyria. One end was Orsino's Disney-like castle, its
lighted turrets and beautifully carved stone draped with vines. For
Olivia's estate on the other side, the ship's sails became huge draperies,
and in front of them stood three large, ornate picture frames, which were
moved into different configurations throughout the play.
Twelfth Night ran for
twenty-six shows over a five-week run.
