The Taming of the Shrew
(2003)

Calhoun Theatre's second interpretation of Shakespeare's popular battle-of-the-sexes was a rollicking comic version set in post-World War II America.

The zany courtship and marriage of Kate and Petruchio is a knock-down, drag-out battle between the two headstrong lovers, but it's also a marriage of two individualists who reject social conventions and are determined to live their lives as they see fit

Symbolic of the couple's rebellion against conformity is the clothes that they wear. When Baptista complains about Petruchio's improper attire for the wedding, Petruchio answers defiantly, "To me she's married, not unto my clothes." Bubba's set reflected the clothes theme, with set pieces from a giant sewing room: bolts of fabric, spools of thread, pins, a pin cushion, and a sixteen-feet-long pair of scissors!

The Taming of the Shrew ran for thirty performances - sixteen for the public and fourteen for area schools – over a six week run..
