Highway Landscaping Project
Calhoun Community College received an award notification from the Alabama Department of Transportation in the amount of $178,400.00 to enhance the school’s landscaping along U.S. Highway 31. The project will provide an attractive and uniform landscape that complements the College while adding beauty to the highway and community.
The landscaping/lighting project will greatly improve the area along U.S. Highway 31 through the natural beauty provided by plants and shrubs. There will be focus areas around the four entrances to the College from U.S. Highway 31. A consistent theme will be used in the project to ensure uniformity along the project area. Trees/plants selected for the entrances will be carefully chosen so that they don’t create a barrier for traffic exiting the College at U.S. Highway 31. Since this route is used by more than 5 million citizens annually, the impact will be extensive.
The landscape plan includes climate-hardy plants such as Dwarf Crape Myrtles, Tree Form Crape Myrtles, Barberries, Varigated Liriope, Lorapetalum, Ornamental Grass, Little Gem Magnolias, Daylillies, Swarf Nandinas, Boxwoods, and Cleyeras. The project also includes an irrigation system, and an energy-efficient, decorative lighting in a period style.
The total cost of the project is $223,000.00. |
