Quality Educational Programs
Calhoun Community College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Accreditation was continued for ten more years in 2001. As part of its mission, Calhoun seeks to ensure the success of its students and clients through providing accessible quality educational opportunities. All faculty members have a minimum of 18 credit hours at the master's level in the discipline in which they are teaching. Twenty-four percent of Calhoun faculty have a doctoral degree.
Computer Information Systems (CIS). The CIS Department offers students a choice of programs in which to prepare as computer specialists. These include:
- The Associate of Science degree in CIS is designed for those who plan to transfer to senior institutions, pursuing a B.S. degree in computer information systems or computer science. The University of Alabama in Huntsville maintains a close relationship with Calhoun, as does Athens State University . Both universities articulate programs so that Calhoun CIS graduates can progress seamlessly into a Computer Science curriculum. There were nine AS degrees awarded in spring 2003, seven to females, five to Whites and three to Blacks.
- The Associate of Applied Science degree in Computer Programming includes several options and specialty courses including Visual Basic, Java, COBOL, HTML, C++, and various scripting languages. Most students in this program are taking job related courses and do not graduate.
- The Associate of Applied Science degree in Microcomputers focuses on developing skills in desktop applications such as Microsoft Office and programming. Calhoun is an authorized Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) training and testing center.
- The Associate of Applied Science degree in Network Technology will begin enrolling students in fall 2004. Developed after extensive research and close coordination with the CIS Industry Excellence Team, the Network Technology degree includes tracks for industry-specific training in Cisco, MCSE, and Novell systems.
Mathematics/Pre-Engineering. This is an associate in science, transfer degree option. Courses in the degree program meet State of Alabama Course Transfer Guidelines and are accepted by all Alabama universities. Many program graduates transfer to the University of Alabama in Huntsville to complete their degree. While actual performance data are not provided by the University on transfer students, discussions with peers at the University by college faculty indicate that Calhoun transfer students perform similarly to native students. Advanced Technology. The Technologies Division offers the following:
- Associate in Applied Science Degree (AAS) in Design Drafting Technology. This program is American Design Drafting Association certified. A total of 214 students were enrolled and 23 graduated in Design Drafting from summer 2002 through spring 2003. All are employed.
- AAS in Advanced Electronic Manufacturing Technology . This new program prepares graduates for electronic industry standard IPC certification. 9
- AAS in Aerospace Technology. This new degree is targeted toward the aerospace industry, which helped design it . The first five graduates completed in spring of 2003 with four now working in aerospace and one working toward a BS degree. Calhoun is part of SpaceTEC, an NSF Center of Excellence, which is working to establish industry standards for such programs. (See NSF funding earlier.)
- AAS in Process Technology. This degree was initiated in December 2003 after being developed over a two year period with area employers. Local industry survey projected 103 job openings per year in the college's service area and 3 05 openings in the state. Calhoun is a participant in CAPT, an NSF Center of Excellence, to establish industry standards and certification in process technology. Annual admission is projected at 15.
