Calhoun Community College will enhance the learning opportunities for low income, academically talented students by offering forty (40) scholarships annually through the Computer Science, Mathematics, and Technology (CMT) Academic Rewards Program. Scholarships will be awarded and renewed only to full-time students declaring a major in Mathematics/Pre-engineering, Computer Information Systems, or an Advanced Technology program. The Scholars must meet NSF eligibility requirements, have and maintain a grade point average of at least 2.75 on a 4.0 scale, and participate in program specific activities.

The CMT Academic Rewards Program will be directed at financially disadvantaged but capable students, with a special emphasis on the recruitment and identification of eligible students from among under-represented groups (female, minority, or persons with disabilities). Its purpose will be to increase the number of well-prepared graduates in technology, computer specialties, and mathematics entering the local job market. This project will "reward" CMT students who are doing well academically and are motivated to continue as full-time students through the financial award and recognition of a scholarship and through participation in a community of learners who receive enhanced discipline-specific support services and activities.

The College serves both the Huntsville and Decatur areas where job opening projections by 2010 include 6,310 computer specialists, 40 mathematical scientists, 1,090 engineers, and 770 advanced technicians, including computer assisted drafting. The College, in cooperation with area industries, has developed several CMT majors to address these needs.
