Academic Rewards Program
Activities on Which the Current Project Builds
This project will build on many student support structures that Calhoun Community College presently provides. Each of these is described in more detail in the Facilities, Equipment and Other Resources Section. The directors of these services will be informed about the Project, coordination of services to Scholars established, and services delivered as appropriate. Scholars will be informed about all applicable services.
Upward Bound provides support services to disadvantaged high school students to help them successfully make the transition from secondary to postsecondary schools. Many are from underrepresented groups. These participants will be recruited/advised about the Scholars Project.
The federally funded Student Support Services project provides academic support and personal advising for disadvantaged students to encourage them to successfully complete their program of study at Calhoun Community College . Many Scholars will be eligible for services.
Calhoun's Tech Prep program serves over 1,000 students in secondary schools in Calhoun's service area by blending technical training and experiences with academic courses in math, science and communications, with an emphasis on moving the students from four years of high school to two years of postsecondary education. The potential for CMT Academic Rewards scholarships will be an incentive to continue their formal education beyond high school.
The Alabama Technology Scholarship Project works to provide educational and training opportunities to unemployed Alabama adults by providing them with scholarships to study technical programs. This support source can combine with the Scholars funds and others to help assure necessary support for unemployed adults in CMT programs.
The Calhoun Academic Advising Center is staffed by full-time advisors all term. The Project PI and Co-PIs will meet with advisors to assure that they are using current information on all CMT programs and that they are informed about the CMT Academic Rewards Project.
The Calhoun Student Assistance Program provides individual counseling sessions for students which focus on mental health, financial, or other counseling needs. Confidential outside counsel is provided for students who might not be comfortable discussing a matter with Calhoun faculty or staff. CMT Scholars will be eligible for these services.
Calhoun Services for Persons with Disabilities include assuring environmental and programmatic access for persons with documented disabilities. Interviews with CMT Scholars will establish the need for assistance through this office.
Calhoun Child Care offers a full-service childcare facility staffed by professionals. Many of the students whom the CMT Scholars Project seeks to recruit are working parents with a need for affordable childcare. Through a federally-funded grant there is a sliding scale fee which provides reduced child care fees for students, including Scholars.
Calhoun Career Services provides assistance in determining a career choice and in seeking employment. This office coordinates business recruitment visits to campus. Scholars will be advised about the services and assisted in their job search through this office. back to main page |
