Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) Program

Background Check & Drug Screening should NOT be completed until you are directed to do so by Program faculty.

Physical therapist assistants (PTAs) are skilled health workers who provide services to clients under the direction and supervision of a physical therapist.  PTAs help people of all ages who have health-related conditions that limit their ability to move and perform functional activities in their daily lives.  Job activities may include helping a person to exercise or learn to use crutches.  Patients may be accident victims or individuals with disabling conditions such as arthritis or head injury or may be recovering from orthopedic surgery.  PTAs work in a variety of settings including hospitals, outpatient clinics, home health, nursing homes, schools, sports facilities, and more.

Physical therapist assistants must complete a 2-year associate's degree and are licensed, certified, or registered in most states.

PTA is one of the top 50 fastest growing occupations in our country.    The median income for a physical therapist assistant is $42,000 depending on position, years of experience, degree of education, geographic location, and practice setting.    (Source: U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics)

Calhoun Community College received permission to offer the Physical Therapist Assistant Program and award the AAS degree in PTA from the Alabama Commission on Higher Education in March 2008.  The College is seeking accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education of the American Physical Therapy Association (1111 North Fairfax Street, Alexandria, VA 22314; phone; 703-706-3245; Accreditation@apta.org).   The program has submitted an Application for Candidacy, which is the formal application required in the pre-accreditation stage. Submission of this document does not assure that the program will be granted Candidate for Accreditation status nor does it assure that the program will be granted Accreditation.
