What is the purpose of HCC 2008?
The primary purpose of this two day experience is to inform young people about the numerous and diverse vocational opportunities available in health care today. Selected students engage in tasks performed by health care professionals, learn about specific health related careers, are given the opportunity to explore their own interests and to consider their options for education past high school.
Where and when does HCC 2008 happen?
Two sessions will be offered: June 11th-12th and July 30th-31st
Participants spend the first day on the Calhoun Community College Decatur Campus in the new state of the art Health Sciences Building learning about a variety of occupations while engaging in hands-on, fun-filled activities. The experience is designed to give an up close look at skills used by a wide variety of health care workers including nurses, vets, radiology and dental technicians, EMS, and laboratory personnel. On the second day campers gather at a local hospital for tours, job shadowing, and the opportunity to speak with health care professionals. In the afternoon there is a wrap-up session back at the College when take home information will be provided on college applications, scholarships, and financial aid.
Is this a day camp or an overnight camp?
This is a day camp only.
What about meals?
Lunch & snacks will be provided both days.
What about transportation?
Transportation is not provided. Free parking is available at Calhoun Community College. There may be a small charge for parking at the hospital.
What is the cost?
There is no charge for this opportunity.
Who can apply?
Students entering the 11th or 12th grade in the fall of 2008 who are truly interested in the health care industry and recommended by their teacher &/or guidance counselor. Applicants should be willing to attend and actively engage in all camp activities.
What if I am not certain that the health care field is right for me?
- You do not have to be certain, as this is what career exploration is all about!

- Does investigation and mystery-solving appeal to you?
- Do you love working with computers?
- Do you like helping people and want to make a difference in your community?
- If you answered “yes” to any of these questions then you are a potential applicant.
Health care is a diverse field that not only includes hands-on careers such as medicine, nursing, dentistry, radiography, and emergency medical services, but also research scientists, laboratory technologists, and information management specialists. Participation in this camp may help you solidify an interest in a particular field or decide that a health career is not the right path for you.
How do I apply?
Click here to download an application package. A completed application, parental consent form, and confidential reference from a teacher well-acquainted with the student must be received by the deadline of May 12th for a student to be considered for either camp session.

How many students will be accepted?
Due to restrictions on the number of student able to tour at the hospitals, attendance will be limited.
What are the criteria for selection?
Applicants must be recommended by a teacher or guidance counselor and submit a completed application by the deadline of May 12, 2008 to be considered.
When will I know if I have been accepted to Camp?
Students will be notified by mail a maximum of three weeks after the application deadline date. You may contact the camp director if you have not been notified after this time period.
