ADVISING CENTERS
Calhoun Community College Terminology
Advisement - seeing an advisor to
ask questions about degree programs and to plan your
course work. Advisement is designed to prepare students
for registration.
Advising Center - an advising
center is located on each campus to assist students with
planning their courses, understanding program
requirements, and getting information on
transferring.
Advisor - a faculty member or
professional staff member trained to work with students in
planning their coursework at Calhoun Community College.
Associate in Applied Science (AAS)
Degree - career and professional degree programs
designed to prepare students for employment upon
graduation.
Associate in Arts (AA) and Associate
in Science (AS) Degree - university parallel degree
tracks designed to prepare students to transfer to
senior institutions and pursue a bachelor's degree.
Audit - to attend a class for
information only, no credit given. The cost of auditing
a course is the same as for taking a course for credit.
Catalog Year - indicates the year
of the degree plan or college catalog that a student is
following for graduation requirements.
Certificate Programs - designed for students who wish to
obtain specific occupational skills.
College Identification Number -
is not your social security number, but rather a coded
seven-digit ID number issed by the college.
Students can obtain their ID number from the
Advising Center or
Admissions Office
with a photo ID.
Complete Withdrawal from College -
withdrawal from all the scheduled courses for that term
after the registration period has ended. A grade of W, WP, or WF will be assigned depending on
when the withdrawal is received. This is a function of
the
Admissions Office.
Course Descriptions - the
information about each course that describes the content
of the course.
Course Load - the number of credit
hours for which a student is registered.
Course Prefixes - the three
letters that identify each subject area.
Course Withdrawal - withdrawal
from a single course after the registration period has
ended. A grade of W, WP, or WF will be assigned
depending on when the withdrawal is received. This
is a function of the
Admissions Office.
Credit Hour - the standard unit
for figuring college credit. Calhoun Community College
awards semester hours credit.
Degree Plan (Curriculum) - a
stated list of courses required to complete a major,
certificate, or degree. Degree plans can be found in the
Calhoun Community College catalog.
Developmental Course - a
skill-building course in reading, writing, or math that
prepares students for freshman-level English and Math.
Distance Education
- courses that use technology to provide instruction to
students who desire to learn outside the regular
classroom.
Drop - withdrawal from a class
before the end of the registration period.
Elective - an academic course that
is optional rather than required to satisfy degree
requirements. Please consult the
Calhoun Community College catalog for specific
program electives.
Freshman - a student with 32 or
less semester hours of credit.
Full-time Student - a student
enrolled for 12 or more semester hours.
Grade
Point Average
(G.P.A.) - total quality points earned (an "A" in a
3-hour course equals 12 quality points, etc.) divided by
a total of the semester hours attempted, regardless of
whether passed or failed.
Grades - grades of A, B, C, D, F,
W, WF, WP, or I are assigned for all college level
courses for which students have registered for credit
(A= 4, B= 3, C=2, D=1, F or WF=0).
Major - an academic area of
specialization chosen by the student.
Minimester - is a shorter
term scheduled within the semester system; two during
the fall semester and two during the spring semester.
Minimester offerings vary during the summer term.
Parking Decal - a decal/hang tag for your
automobile issued through the campus police station on
the Decatur campus or at the bookstore located at the
Huntsville campus.
Part-time Student - a student
enrolled in less than twelve semester hours.
Placement
Testing
- all students are required to complete a Placement
Test in English and Mathematics prior to registering for
a course in these disciplines unless the student has
meet the exemptions found in the
Calhoun Community College catalog.
Prerequisite - a requirement that
must be met before another course is taken.
Readmission - students who have
not enrolled at Calhoun Community College for more than
one semester must submit an application for readmission
to reactivate their file.
Registration - is the process of
signing up for classes for the subsequent semester.
Students are encouraged to register early online.
Schedules of students who do not submit payment by the
deadline are dropped.
Semester - sixteen-week courses
taught at the Decatur and Huntsville campuses.
Sophomore - a student with 33 or
more semester hours of credit.
STARS
- a computerized
advising system created to inform students of the
courses that they can take and transfer among public
institutions within the state without losing credit.
Student Identification Cards
- all students enrolled at Calhoun Community College are
required to have in their possession a valid Student
I.D. card for general identification purposes and to
present it upon demand when requested by a school
official.
Suspension - after having been on
probation, a student's cumulative GPA drops below the
minimum required GPA for the number of hours attempted.
The Standards of Progress Policy is printed in the
Calhoun Community College catalog.
Transcript - a student's permanent
record of courses taken and grades received.
Transfer Courses -
non-developmental courses for which four-year colleges
will accept as meeting degree requirements.
Transient Student - a student
enrolled at an institution who will attend another
institution and then return to the home institution.
Tuition - the charge for enrolling
in college courses based on the number of credit hours a
student is taking and the student's place of legal
residence. Schedules of students who do not submit
payment by the deadline are dropped.
Weekend College - is available at
the Huntsville/Research Park campus during Fall and
Spring semesters. Most classes meet on Friday nights and
on Saturday mornings.
