Groundbreaking Ceremony Launches Construction of New Automotive Technology Building for Calhoun Community College in Decatur

Calhoun Community College will break ground on the new Automotive Technology Training Center on Thursday, September 28,10:00 am, on the north side of the old Fine Arts building, Decatur campus. The event is free and open to the public.
Ceremony speakers will include:

- Dr. Jim Klauber, Calhoun President
- Arthur Orr, Alabama State Senator
- Crystal Brown, ACCS Board of Trustees
The one-story, approximately 23,400-square-foot building will be developed over two major construction phases to facilitate the curriculums’ specialized needs; which primarily includes technical repair training for automobiles and heavy diesel machinery. The $6.9M facility will be located on the southeast corner of the campus facing Highway 31. The initial first phase construction is scheduled for completion in fall 2018 and will facilitate automobile repair training only at an anticipated capacity of 200 students per school year, comprised of first and second year students studying under staggered class schedules.
“Calhoun has been without an Automotive Technology Program for many years, and we are extremely excited about bringing the program back. The automotive industry has a shortage of workers with these skills, and this program will equip our future students with the necessary training to fill those industry gaps”, commented Jim Klauber, Calhoun President.
The two-year curriculum will prepare students for entry-level positions in the automotive service industry. The program will seek accreditation from the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF). The automotive program plans to become a Master Automobile Service Technician (MAST) accredited program within the first year of opening. This accreditation will include suspension and steering, brakes, engine performance, engine repair, heating & air conditioning, electrical/electronic systems, automatic transmission/transaxle and manual drive transmission and axles. Actual training will occur between both classrooms and laboratory.
