Calhoun Community College and the Decatur-Morgan Chamber of Commerce hosts the 12th Annual SWeETy Camp
June 6, 2017
This week, Calhoun Community College and the Decatur-Morgan County Chamber of Commerce are teaming up to host SWeETy camp for girls. This annual camp is being held daily in the Aerospace Training Center on the Decatur campus from 8:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
The camp is designed for female students entering 9th through 12th grade that are interested in welding and electrical technology. The goal is to offer girls an opportunity to gain basic hands-on experience that can lead to high-paying careers in high growth industries. After first learning the importance of safety when working with electrical mechanisms and welding, the campers learn many intricate parts that go into both welding and electrical technology, such as various welding processes and procedures, and electrical wiring parts and components.
“Many young women are interested in welding and technical fields, but don’t have an opportunity to expand their knowledge in that area at school. SWeETy camp is ideal for those young ladies, as it helps expand their knowledge in a field that has been seen for many years as non-traditional for women”, commented Gwen Baker, Calhoun Dual Enrollment Director. SWeETy camp is held each summer on Calhoun’s Decatur campus.
