Our first production of the new millenium was perhaps the most popular play of all time, Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. It proved to be quite a draw: a run of four weekends plus many daytime shows for area schools added up to thirty-two performances. The set was a cosmos, white stars swirling around explosions of Capulet red and Montague blue. The costumes and music were quasi-sixteenth century but hinted of the twentieth. The actors wore synthetic fabrics and modem colors, and the music was Resphighi's Ancient Airs and Dances, twentieth-century orchestrations of centuries-old folk tunes. These modem variations reflected the timelessness of this unforgettable tragedy, a love story for all the ages. |
