Othello is the most intense of Shakespeare's great tragedies, an achingly
mesmerizing story of love and friendship strangled by the "green eyed
monster" of jealousy. Set against a background of war and racial
tension, Calhoun's Othello was updated to the post 9/11 world, connecting
the play's themes to many of today's most emotionally charged issues and
forcing audience members to examine their own beliefs and values.
The Black Box was reconfigured into a thrust stage to facilitate
projecting onto the stage pictures of 9/11, the war in Iraq, an imperial
Venetian flag, and many other images.
Othello ran for 22 performances from February 21 to March 19.
Its images of terrorism and battle projected onto the back wall.
The play takes place in Venice and Cyprus.
Othello runs approximately 2:15, including a ten-minute intermission.
