Career Opportunities in the Field
The
electrical industry is a career-goaled,
lucrative, and rewarding industry that
offers many avenues to success.
Employment opportunities include
companies in the field of Cable TV,
electronics, net working, Power
Production, Instrumentation, and
Electrical Construction (residential,
commercial, and industrial). Additional
fields of interest are maintenance and
companies employing multi-craft
maintenance personnel for manufacturing
and processing plants and Heating,
Ventilation and Air-Conditioning
(residential, commercial, industrial and
maintenance).

Dual Enrollment student at work.
The
electrical industry is finding a
shortage of semi-skilled trainable
people to enter their workforce. To
compensate for this shortage, the
industry has been offering entry-level
salaries in excess of $30,000 per year.

Electrical Technology
The Electrical Technology program at Calhoun
Community College is divided into four
options. All students in the program must
take a common four course electrical core
before branching into one of the following
specialties:
Electrical Specialization
This curriculum prepares the student for
immediate employment in Industrial
Electrical Maintenance and
Industrial/Commercial and Electrical
Construction. Industries have a growing need
for well-trained individuals with skills in
maintaining the electrical equipment used in
high-tech industries as well as in the
electrical construction of commercial and
industrial facilities.
HVAC Specialization
This curriculum prepares the student for an
entry-level job in multi-craft maintenance
with specific skills in electricity,
refrigeration and hydraulics/pneumatics.
Small manufacturing and the service industry
have a growing need for well-trained
individuals with multi-craft maintenance job
skills. Specific areas of the service
industry will include hotel/motel/resort
industry, apartment complexes, hospitals,
nursing/retirement centers and food
processing.
Industrial Maintenance Specialization
This curriculum, developed with input from
industry, will enable graduates to attain or
upgrade skills in maintenance. The courses
are related to industrial demands, enabling
a student the opportunity to enhance
proficiency in basic electricity, heating
and cooling, hydraulics/pneumatics, and
basic machinery skills, including lathe,
milling, precision measurement application,
and industrial drawing specifications.
Employment opportunities exist in business
and industry for persons that have knowledge
and understanding of maintaining plant
process equipment, support equipment,
various systems and sub-systems, and
components used in today's modern industrial
plants.
Electronic Instrumentation Specialization
This option allows the student to pursue a
career as an Industrial Instrumentation
Technician. Emphasis is placed on the use of
various hand tools, blueprint reading,
process control technology, instrument
installation, distributive control systems
and the systematic approach to solving
problems with practical experience in the
related areas.
See the
Program Brochure that contains the curriculum for each of these specialized programs.
