SERVICE LEARNING PROGRAM
STUDENT INSTRUCTIONS AND GUIDELINES
CONGRATULATIONS on choosing a Service Learning option in your course. The experience will afford you the opportunity to serve others in your community while putting into practice some of the classroom knowledge from a specific course(s) or providing some “hands on” activities related to your chosen career.
KEEP IN MIND that you MUST do the following:
- Inform your instructor that you wish to do service learning;
- Complete an application form online or in the Service Learning Office, located in the Student Affairs Office, room 205 Chasteen Student Center;
- Contact the agency supervisor to set up an initial interview;
- Once approved, inform the Service Learning Office as to your choice of agency; ***
- Review and print the Service Learning Guidelines for Students;
- Print a copy of the student Timesheet for you to document your service learning hours;
- Once you complete your service learning hours, mail/fax/deliver your timesheet to the Service Learning Office as soon as possible in order to obtain your class credit.
***If the agency/school where you would like to serve is not on Calhoun’s partnership list, the agency should complete an Agency Application to become an official Calhoun Service Learning Agency.
REMEMBER to treat your service commitment like a job. If you can’t make it for whatever reason, let your supervisor know immediately.
REFLECTION is an important part of the service experience, so be sure to ask your instructor exactly what type of writing, discussion, and/or presentation you will be required to do. Keep this in mind as you perform your service hours.
CELEBRATE your service experience by sharing it with others. Continue your commitment if your schedule permits, or plan to become a volunteer at another time.
SERVICE is addictive, but it’s substance USE not ABUSE!!!
