Morgan County Commission to Present
Calhoun Community College with $1m Robotics Center Check

John Glasscock, chairman of the Morgan County Commission, will present Calhoun Community College with a check for one million dollars on Tuesday, September 16, 2008. The presentation takes place at 2:30 p.m. in the President’s Office on the Decatur Campus. According to Glasscock, the check represents Morgan County’s commitment to the College’s new ROBOTICS MAINTENANCE TRAINING CENTER.

The CENTER, announced this past June by Governor Riley, is a collaboration between the state of Alabama, the two-year college system, AIDT, and robotics industry leaders. Initial plans call for three building phases on a 53 acre site directly across Hwy 31 from Calhoun’s Decatur campus. Phase 1: The Robotic Maintenance Training Center will house an industry training program. Phase 2: The Advanced Technology Research and Development Center will feature a test facility for companies currently in the robotics manufacturing industry. Phase 3: The Integration and Entrepreneurial Center is expected to be a collaborative consolidation of technology involving higher education and industry.

Classes in the $15 M Robotic Maintenance Training Center are expected to begin with the Fall 2009 semester. In addition to Morgan County’s contributions, the state pledged $8M in interest bearing bond proceeds for the project, and the Department of Post-Secondary Education, Limestone County, and Calhoun will contribute monies for Phase 1 construction. Robotic industry leaders such as Omoron, Mitsubishi, ABB Robotics, Rockwell, and Fanuc, have agreed to contribute $40M in equipment for the state-of-the-art training center.
