Calhoun Community College Receives $5,000 Grant
from the Daniel Foundation of Alabama for Robotics Camps
Calhoun Community College recently received a $5,000 grant from the Daniel Foundation of Alabama to fund the expansion of the college’s Virtual Journeys Robotics Camps for 2009 to include a musical component.
Each summer since 2001, Calhoun has hosted the Virtual Journeys camps to serve youth in grades 6 through 12 with opportunities to immerse themselves into the 21st century technologies of robotics, 3D modeling, and animation. These science and technology-based camps have been extremely successful and have grown in enrollment each year. The camps incorporate five consecutive days of development with a steady progression of knowledge-based challenges presented each session of the camp.
With the awarding of this additional funding from the Daniel Foundation of Alabama, the Calhoun will be able to expand the program to include a musical component. According to Dr. Sue Mitchell, Lead Faculty of Calhoun’s Computer Information Systems division and coordinator of the Virtual Journeys camps, studies show students who play musical instruments also do well in math and science.
