Calhoun Community to Host
Sixth Annual Writers' Conference
Calhoun Community College, in partnership with the Princess Theatre, will present the Sixth Annual Writers’ Conference, Monday, April 23, 2007, at 7:00 p.m. at the Princess Theatre and Tuesday, April 24 at 9:00 a.m. at Calhoun Community College’s Aerospace Training Center on the Decatur campus.
Featured writer for this year’s conference is Clifton Taulbert, author of the acclaimed work “Once Upon a Time, When We Were Colored”. A Pulitzer nominated author and the President and Founder of the Building Community Institute, Taulbert speaks throughout the world on the critical issue of building community, a set of emotionally satisfying relationships, within all the places of our living...creating an environment branded by Respect, Affirmation and Inclusion. He is also the author of the internationally acclaimed book, “Eight Habits of the Heart”, a book that provides the framework on which to build, maintain and sustain a powerful, effective and caring Community.
According to Taulbert, "By building a powerful, effective and caring community, we can transform our environment into one that values cooperative living, and welcomes diversity in all the areas of life.” By creating an atmosphere that supports the timeless values highlighted in his writings and conversations, individuals become part of a dynamic working community, engendering greater productivity and personal fulfillment. Taulbert’s ideals of community extend the reach of the "Front Porch People", those he encountered while growing up in the Mississippi Delta.
Both events are open to the public. Admission to the April 23 event is $10.00 for the general public; $5.00 for K-12 teachers and students (school I.D. required); and free to Calhoun faculty, staff, and students (Calhoun I.D. required). Admission is free to all who attend the April 24 event at Calhoun.
Mr. Taulbert will autograph copies of his works during both sessions. Copies of “Once Upon a Time” and “Eight Habits of the Heart” are now available for purchase at the Calhoun bookstore. Copies of both works will also be available for purchase at the April 23 and 24 events.
