Calhoun to Hold Reception to Recognize
"Top Ten Students" for 2007
Calhoun Community College President Marilyn C. Beck will present the college's Top Ten Students during an 11:00 a.m. reception in their honor Thursday, April 19, 2007, in the lobby of the Aerospace Training Center (ATC) on the Decatur campus.
The ten students honored were chosen on the basis of their college and community service and academic achievements from among the approximately 8,800 students enrolled at Calhoun this year. Calhoun's Top Ten Students for 2007 are:

Seth Austin is a Nursing major from Decatur, Alabama. He serves as a Calhoun Warhawk and is an active member of Sigma Kappa Delta and Baptist Campus Ministries. Seth is one of two Calhoun students honored recently as a member of the All-Alabama Academic Team for 2007. Seth is very active in his community through his involvement with events such as the Teen Transition Clinic, a rehab program designed to assist adolescents and young adults with disabilities in transitioning into adult life. Seth plans to eventually become a nurse anesthetist and work in the foreign mission fields. His GPA is 3.8. |

Kimberly Haney is a Secondary Education major from Athens, Alabama. She serves as a Calhoun Warhawk ambassador, as well as a Lady Warhawk softball player. Kimberly is a member of Phi Theta Kappa and is active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Her goal is to complete her education degree and “influence young minds to be all they can be and reach for their highest goals.” Her GPA is 3.8.

Christopher David Hornbuckle is a Biology major from Danville, Alabama. Chris serves as a Calhoun Warhawk and an Upward Bound Tutor. He is active in Phi Theta Kappa and Sigma Kappa Delta. Chris is very active in his community through involvement in his church youth group and through assistant coaching a local high school basketball team. His goal is to eventually attend UAB and obtain a degree in physical therapy. His GPA is 3.9.

Lacey Elizabeth Keenum is an Accounting/Business major from Athens, Alabama. She serves as a Calhoun Warhawk ambassador as well as a Lady Warhawk softball player. Lacey is a member of Phi Theta Kappa and is active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She is active in her community through her church involvement and volunteer work. Her goal is to attend Athens State University to obtain a degree in education and eventually become a math teacher. Her GPA is 3.8.

Siedyria Mallard is a Nursing/Pre-Med major from Decatur, Alabama. She is a member of the National Dean’s List and President’s List. She is very active in her community by volunteering in many local projects, as well as working in her church. Her goal is to “become a successful doctor and travel to give medical aid to people in other countries.” She also would like to become more active in community services and world-wide projects. Her GPA is 3.9.

Daniel Martin is a Theater major from Trinity, Alabama. He is a member of the Drama Club and has acted in four productions and assisted with many more productions through various other positions. He also contributes to the campus literary magazine “Muse.” Daniel has volunteered in his community through serving as a counselor for the Summer Shakespeare Camp and acting coach at a local fine arts studio. His goal is to eventually either act professionally or teach theater in high school or college. His GPA is 3.8.

Jennifer Moore is an English major from Huntsville, Alabama. She is an active member of Sigma Kappa Delta, Phi Theta Kappa, and the Student Government Association and was honored recently as a member of the All-Alabama Academic Team for 2007. She also served as the Assistant Editor to the school newspaper and was chosen by her peers as Ms. Calhoun 2006. She has volunteered in her community through her work with the Salvation Army at Christmas. Jennifer’s goal is to finish her education and eventually become a college English professor. Her GPA is 3.8

Carlos Perez is a Chemistry major from Decatur, Alabama; however, he is considered an International student. He is involved in Phi Theta Kappa as well as the Spanish Club. He is the recipient of several scholarships to Calhoun and has volunteered as a high school tutor at Butler High School in Huntsville. He also volunteers as an English/Spanish translator when needed. His goal is to eventually become a doctor and practice either in the United States or in Mexico. His GPA is 3.7.

Dorothy Laquinn Richey is a General Education major from Hartselle, Alabama. She is a member of Phi Theta Kappa and works full-time for Calhoun as the Secretary to the Student Support Services Emerging Scholars Program. She is active in her community through her church involvement and musical abilities. Her goal is to help the students involved in the Student Support Services Program “know that someone believes in them and that they have someone to turn to for encouragement.” Her GPA is 4.0.

Melinda Simpkins is a Theatre major from Athens, Alabama. She is a member of Phi Theta Kappa and Sigma Kappa Delta. She has been the recipient of a Calhoun theatre scholarship and has assisted with set design and performances. She is active in her community through her involvement with 4-H. Her goal is to obtain a degree in business and marketing and eventually own/operate her own theatre/café business. Her GPA is 3.8
