Calhoun Community College Receives $1.5M Federal Grant
Calhoun Community College has been awarded a $1,560,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education to fund the college’s Upward Bound project. The four-year grant begins this year and will be funded in the amount of $390,000 per year through August 31, 2011.
Upward Bound is a federally-funded program designed to encourage high school students to complete their secondary education and pursue higher education. Eighty-five high school students (grades 9 through 12) from Lawrence County were selected to participate in the program this year. Calhoun’s Upward Bound project has been in existence since 1989, serving hundreds of rural high school students from the Lawrence County area since its inception.
In order to assist in the academic development and educational motivation required for successful completion of high school and college, the project provides after-school tutoring, Saturday workshops, college and cultural exposure, counseling, and summer residential programs. Individualized education plans are developed for all participants to assist them in upgrading their academic abilities. All participants receive instruction through Upward Bound in the following core subjects: English Composition and Literature, Science classes with laboratories, mathematics through calculus, foreign language, career exploration and reading comprehension.
