Calhoun to Host Seventh Annual "Let's Pretend Hospital"
in College's New Health Sciences Center
The Nursing Department at Calhoun Community College, in partnership with Decatur General Hospital, will host the seventh annual "Let's Pretend Hospital", a mock hospital for area first graders, March 13-16, 2007, beginning at 8:30 a.m. each day. This year’s event holds special significance; it will be the first time Let’s Pretend Hospital activities will be held in Calhoun’s new Health Sciences Center located on the Decatur campus.
According to Jan Peek, chairperson of Calhoun’s Nursing Department, "Let's Pretend Hospital" is a project to provide first graders with 'friendly' information about what actually happens when someone is admitted to the hospital, has surgery, etc. "All the information presented in this mock hospital setting is done so on a non-threatening, first grade level," said Ms. Peek.
Twenty schools from the city of Decatur, Morgan County, and local private schools will participate in this year's activity, allowing over 1200 first graders to tour the various areas of a mock hospital. The “mock” hospital will include an admissions office, ER, hospital patient room, operating room, x-ray, and discharge area. The "hospital" is being assembled by Calhoun Nursing students and Nursing faculty, who have spent hours planning and preparing for the event.
"This project is a great opportunity for Calhoun's Nursing Department to partner with one of our largest nursing employers, Decatur General," commented Ms. Peek. Over 350 nursing students at the college are participating in the project. "The program also provides an opportunity for both our practical nursing and associate degree nursing students to participate in health teaching and be actively involved in a community pediatric experience," Ms. Peek added.
In conjunction with the Thursday, March 15, Let’s Pretend Hospital event, a special media tour of the new Health Sciences Center will be conducted, beginning at 10:00 am. Media will have an opportunity to tour this state-of-the-art healthcare training facility and to talk with students and faculty from the programs now housed in the facility (nursing, dental assisting, emergency medical services, surgical technology) as well as to hear more about several new health programs being offered by Calhoun, including massage therapy, clinical laboratory technology, phlebotomy, and certified nursing assistant.
