Calhoun to Offer Summer Health Career Camp
for High School Students
Local high school students will have the opportunity to explore various health careers “up close and personal” during a summer Health Career Camp, sponsored by the Calhoun Community College Project AHEAD (Alternate Health Education Asynchronous Delivery) program, Decatur General Hospital, and Huntsville Hospital. The camp will be held June 13-14, 2007.
The Health Career Camp is designed to inform young people about the many vocational opportunities available in health care today. Selected students, who are entering the 11th& 12th grades, will learn about specific work duties involved in various health occupations, explore their own interests in these fields, and consider options for education past high school. Participating students will have the opportunity to practice skills used by health care providers in nursing, dental, emergency medicine, surgery, massage therapy, radiology/X-ray and clinical laboratory technology. The students will visit and talk with healthcare professionals where they work and will be given information on application to Calhoun, scholarships and financial aid.
The first day of the camp will be spent on Calhoun’s Decatur campus in the college’s new Health Sciences Center. The day will be spent learning about occupations in health care while participating in hands-on, fun-filled activities designed to expose & stimulate campers to the exciting world of medicine. All experiences are designed to give an up close look at skills used by a wide variety of health care workers including nurses, vets, radiology and dental technicians, EMS and laboratory professionals. Students will rotate through each of the health programs offered at Calhoun.
The first half of Day 2 will be spent at Decatur General and Huntsville Hospitals, where students will tour various departments and have the opportunity to speak with healthcare professionals. The afternoon of Day 2, students will return to the Calhoun campus for a wrap-up session.
The two-day Health Career Camp is free, and lunch and snacks will be provided each day. Transportation for the camp is the responsibility of each student. Free parking is provided at Calhoun; parking for a fee of $1-2 is available at both hospitals.
Interested students or parents should call Calhoun’s Project AHEAD office at 256/260-2491 or visit the AHEAD website. Application deadline is May 15.
