Calhoun Community College
Announces 2006 Graduation
Calhoun Community College will conduct its 2006 graduation ceremonies on Friday, May 12, 2006, beginning at 6:00 p.m. in the Kelley Gymnasium, located on the college’s Decatur campus.
According to the Calhoun Admissions Office, approximately 1200 students have completed requirements for graduation during the 2005-2006 academic year. Of that number, around 400 plan to participate in the graduation ceremony.
Keynote speaker for this year’s graduation service is Calhoun English instructor and author Dr. Randy Cross. Cross holds a Ph.D. in English from the University of Mississippi and is the co-editor of Laughing Stock, the autobiography of T. S. Stribling, and the author of Introductions for three of Stribling’s novels. Cross has published scholarly articles and reviews in professional journals including American Literature, The South Atlantic Review, and the Mark Twain Journal. He has delivered hundreds of lectures on Southern literature and history for Auburn University’s Arts and Humanities Center and the Alabama Humanities Foundation. Cross is a two-time Fulbright Scholar and a retired lieutenant colonel from the Tennessee Army National Guard.
Also during the graudation ceremony, Medallions of Recognition will be presented, honoring several individuals for their service to the college. Among those to be recognized are local physician Dr. George Hansberry for his long-time service to Calhoun and to the Calhoun Foundation; Mr. Jack Barham, Calhoun faculty member and announcer for many years for the college’s graduation ceremonies; Dr. Cross; Calhoun student Marty Kellum, recognized recently as one of the nation’s top 20 students on the All-USA Academic First Team; and retiring faculty members Carmen Blalock (social sciences/distance education), Gail Pisani (nursing), Eloise Carroll (business), and Annie J. Jones (math).
Earlier in the day, the annual Candle lighting Ceremony for graduates of the College’s Associate Degree Nursing program will be held at 2:00 p.m., also in the gymnasium. Keynote speaker for the ceremony will be Deby Lee, Calhoun nursing instructor.
On Thursday, May 18, the College will recognize the 2006 Adult Education graduates. This ceremony will take place in the Kelley Gymnasium at 7:00 p.m.
