Calhoun to Hold Reception to Recognize
"Top Ten Students" for 2006
Calhoun Community College President Marilyn C. Beck will present the college's Top Ten Students during a 10:30 a.m. reception in their honor Tuesday, April 18, 2006, in the lobby of the Aerospace Training Center (ATC) on the Decatur campus.
The ten students honored were chosen on the basis of their college and community service and academic achievements from among the 9000-plus students enrolled at Calhoun this year. Calhoun's Top Ten Students for 2006 are:

Olivia C. Augustus is a General Education Major from Madison, Alabama. Olivia was named as one of Calhoun’s two nominees for the All-USA Academic Team, and was named to the All-Alabama Academic Team for 2006. She serves as President of Phi Theta Kappa this year and was Vice President last year. She is an active member of the Calhoun Warhawks, Sigma Kappa Delta, and the Psychology Club. She also serves as an ambassador to the Student Support Services Emerging Scholars Program. This is the second year Olivia has been named as one of Calhoun’s Top Ten Students. She plans to continue her education at Alabama A&M University and obtain her Master’s Degree in Social Work and eventually work with troubled adolescents. |

Kimberly Clark is a Theatre/General Education Major from Toney, Alabama. Kimberly is a member of Phi theta Kappa, Sigma Kappa Delta, Who’s Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges, and serves as the President for the Drama Club. She was named Most Outstanding Theatre Student for 2005 and has participated in many theatre productions on campus during her tenure at Calhoun. Kimberly plans to attend Athens State University and obtain her degree in Business Management. Her ultimate goal is to eventually open her own theatre company and share her passion with others. |

Anthony Crutch is a Design Drafting Major from Decatur, Alabama. Anthony is a member of Phi Theta Kappa, Sigma Kappa Delta, and serves as an Upward Bound Tutor. He was a Calhoun Warhawk last year and this is also Anthony’s second year to be named as one of Calhoun’s Top Ten Students. Anthony plans to obtain his degree in Mechanical Engineering from The University of Alabama in Huntsville. Anthony is not only a successful student academically, but he is also very talented musically. Along with his twin brother, they have performed at many functions both on and off campus. |

Laura Leigh Keenum is an Elementary Education Major from Athens, Alabama. Laura Leigh serves as this year’s Co Head Warhawk, and is a member of Calhoun’s Lady Warhawks Softball Team. She serves as a club representative to the Student Government Association, is a member of Phi Theta Kappa and Sigma Kappa Delta. Laura Leigh plans to complete her education at Athens State University and eventually enter law school at The University of Alabama. Her ultimate goal is to practice education and children’s welfare law. |

Marty Kellum is a Math Major from Athens, Alabama. Marty was one of Calhoun’s two nominees for the All-USA Academic Team, and was named to the All-Alabama Academic Team for 2006. He was also chosen as Alabama’s New Century Scholar for 2006. He serves as a Senator for the Student Government Association, and as President for Sigma Kappa Delta. He is also a member of Phi Theta Kappa, and is a staff writer for the Warhawk Herald. Marty plans to attend The University of Alabama in Huntsville and pursue a double major in Mathematics and Physics, with a concentration in Astrophysics. His ultimate goal is to obtain a Ph.D. in Astrophysics and eventually teach college level physics and/or mathematics. |

Christopher Hardin Law is an Athletic Training Major from Oxford, Alabama. Chris is a member of the Calhoun Warhawks Baseball Team and also serves as a member of Sigma Kappa Delta. He is active in the Career Young Adult Group at his church and volunteers with community service in his hometown. Chris strives to be a positive role model – he feels that living by example is the best way to encourage others to do the same. Chris plans to pursue his education and obtain a stable job in the field of athletic training. His ultimate goal is to raise a wonderful Christian family and open his own athletic training business. |

Dorothy Laquinn Richey is a General Education Major from Hartselle, Alabama. Laquinn is the secretary for Calhoun’s Student Support Services Emerging Scholars Program. She is a member of Phi Theta Kappa and Who’s Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges. Laquinn is active in her church and participates in a music ministry at USA Healthcare in Decatur. She has been encouraged to pursue her education by the students and staff in the Student Support Services Program, which she is doing along with her daughter, who is also a Calhoun student. Her goal is to one day be a director for a program similar to Student Support Services. |

Matthew Shannon is a Chemical Engineering Major from Ardmore, Alabama. Matthew serves as a lab assistant in both the Math Lab and Science Learning Center at Calhoun. He is a member of Who’s Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges, and is a recipient of a Calhoun Computer Science, Mathematics & Technology (CMT) Scholarship. Matthew has volunteered in his community through tutoring high school and college students. He plans to complete his engineering degree at The University of Alabama in Huntsville and eventually obtain a Master’s Degree in the field of Biotechnologies. |

Sean Tyson Travis is a Biology/Pre-Med Major from Athens, Alabama. Sean has participated in many activities on campus such as the College Discipline Committee, a participant of the annual African American Read-In, Gospel Fest, and student speaker at the Foundation Scholarship Reception. He is a member of Phi Theta Kappa, Sigma Kappa Delta, Who’s Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges, and Black Student Alliance. Sean was named as Mr. Calhoun 2005, and was the recipient of both the Wendy Williams PTK Memorial Scholarship and the Betsy Cantrell Memorial Scholarship for 2005. Sean plans to pursue his education at The University of Alabama in Birmingham and his ultimate goal is to become an anesthesiologist. |

David Mark Walden is a Nursing Major from Somerville, Alabama. David is a member of Student Support Services, Phi Theta Kappa, and Sigma Kappa Delta. He is also an evangelist, serving both the college and his community through outreach efforts such as food and clothing drives. David plans to obtain his Nursing Degree from Calhoun and later obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from The University of Alabama in Birmingham and become a CRNA. Once he completes his education, he would like to focus his attention on foreign missions. |
