Calhoun to Host Japanese Taiko Drum Duo

Calhoun Community College, in partnership with Daikin America of Decatur, will host a pair of concerts next week featuring the unique sounds of AUN, a Japatronic Taiko Drum Duo.  The concerts will be held in the Fine Arts auditorium on the Decatur campus at 1:00 p.m., May 24 and 25, 2006.  The performances are free and open to the public, courtesy of Daikin America of Decatur.

AUN was founded in 2000 by twin brothers, Ryohei and Kohei Inoue, former members of the world renowned Japanese Super Taiko Drum group, Ondekoza.  AUN is named for the twin Buddha statues in the Todaiji temple in Nara, Japan.  It also represents “A” (the beginning) and “UN” (the end) in Japanese Buddhism.  Unlike other Taiko Drum artists, AUN crosses music and cultural boundaries by merging traditional Japanese instruments with electronic sound – hence the name “Japatronic.”  In 2005, AUN moved to New York City and made plans to visit 100 high schools and universities in the US during 2006, to allow Americans to experience both Japanese traditional and contemporary culture through their performances and workshops.

In addition to the Calhoun performances, AUN will also take the stage at this year’s Daikin Fest.  Daikin Fest is one of many local community programs offered throughout the year by Daikin America to its neighbors in the Tennessee Valley, including Home-Stay, where area high school students spend the summer in Japan; scholarships to local minority college students; and art contests in valley schools.  Daikin Fest provides a variety of great music, Japanese folk dancing, entertainment, food, games for all ages, exciting door prizes, and hot-air balloon rides.  This year’s festival is scheduled for Friday, May 26th, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., at the Morgan County Fairgrounds, and is free of charge to all community members.  For more information about Daikin Fest, please contact Forrest Keith, Daikin America Human Resources, at 256-306-5000.
