Calhoun Community College to Offer Courses
this Spring in Two New Health Programs

Calhoun Community College will begin offering courses this spring in two new health programs – Phlebotomy and Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).  Registration for Calhoun’s spring semester is currently underway; classes begin January 8, 2007.

According to Jan Peek, chair of Calhoun’s Nursing Department, both the Phlebotomy (lab technicians certified to collect blood) and CNA courses were introduced at the college to help meet the growing demand for skilled health care workers and will complement the college’s current health programs in Nursing, Dental Assisting, Surgical Operating Room Technology, Emergency Medical Services, Clinical Laboratory Technology and Radiography.

“Both the Phlebotomy and CNA courses prepare those who successfully complete the programs to take the certification exam related to each.  While the courses prepare individuals for entry-level positions in the healthcare field, they offer tremendous opportunity for advancement,” commented Peek.

Peek adds that the CNA course will be offered during the day and evening to accommodate a variety of schedules.  Additionally, the Phlebotomy course will be offered in the evening during the 2007 spring semester.

The CNA course prepares a person to work under the supervision of a registered or licensed practical nurse to give direct patient care in a variety of health care settings.  Calhoun’s CNA program is approved by the Alabama Department of Public Health and prepares students to take the state Nursing Assistant Certification exam.  The course fulfills the seventy-five (75) hour Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (OBRA) requirements for training of long-term care nursing assistants in preparation for certification through competency evaluation. Emphasis is placed on the development of the knowledge, attitudes, and skills required of the long-term care nursing assistant.

The Phlebotomy course covers the basic techniques used in the collection of blood specimens. The class includes equipment and additives, basic anatomy, and techniques for safe and effective venipuncture.

To qualify for admission into either program, students must meet Calhoun’s basic admissions requirements.  For more information about enrollment procedures, costs or how to register, contact Ms. Peek at 256/306-2795 or visit the Project AHEAD website.
