Calhoun's Alabama Fatherhood Initiative Receives $50,000
The Calhoun Community College Alabama Fatherhood Initiative Program (AFI) of Morgan County recently received funding in the amount of $50,000 from the State of Alabama Department of Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention (children’s Trust fund-CTF). The AFI program is designed to provide education and short-term skills training necessary for a non-custodial parent (NCP) to find employment to meet financial as well as emotional needs of their children. Services include job readiness training, job development, child support education, job referral, and substance abuse referrals to non-custodial parents.
The AFI serves 50-60 participants per year. Referrals to the program are made by the court system or the Department of Human Resources. With the additional funding, the AFI Program will expand its services to participants from Limestone County. To date, the program has served 87 NCPs in some capacity. There are 40 program participants who are currently employed along with an additional 36 who are in job-training courses at the present time. The Calhoun Community College AFI program has resulted in $97,000 in child support being collected from the NCPs.
