Calhoun Announces Free Tuition Scholarships
for 2005 High School Graduates

Patricia Gaiter to be Spring 2005 Calhoun GraduateCalhoun Community College President Marilyn Beck today announced that the college will again offer free full-tuition scholarships this summer for high school graduates. Scholarships are available for 2005 high school graduates attending a high school in the college's service area (Madison, Morgan, Lawrence or Limestone counties).

To qualify for the free tuition scholarships, students must graduate this May with at least a 2.5 grade point average (based on a 4.0 scale); must be degree-seeking (intend to enroll at Calhoun for the 2005 fall semester); must apply for the 2004-2005 Pell grant by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA); and complete a Calhoun scholarship application and admissions application; and must register for at least six (6) semester hours.

According to Calhoun's Financial Aid Director, Deborah Byrd, students qualifying for a Pell grant must first use this funding to enroll. Calhoun will provide funding for full tuition for at least six but no more than 12 semester hours for those students not qualifying for the Pell grant. "It is also important for students to note that they will be responsible for any necessary fees and for the purchase of all textbooks," said Mrs. Byrd.

"We are extremely pleased to be able to again offer this free tuition program to our local students," commented Dr. Beck. "The initial year of the program last summer was extremely successful and provided an opportunity for many of our recent high school graduates to get a head-start on their college education while providing some financial relief for their parents during the summer," said Dr. Beck.

"This year, we have a larger pool of dollars available for this scholarship, which will allow us to assist an even greater number of students," Dr. Beck added.

Scholarships will be awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis until the fund is exhausted, so early application is encouraged. Deadline to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form for Pell grant certification is April 1, 2005 . Deadline for application for the free tuition scholarships is May 1. Calhoun's eight-week summer semester classes begin May 31. Click here for a scholarship application packet. You will also need to complete an application for admission to Calhoun.
