Calhoun Community College Awarded
$235,000 Student Support Services Grant
Calhoun Community College has been awarded a four-year Student Support Services (SSS) grant by the U.S. Department of Education. The grant provides $235,689 for the first year, with similar funding levels expected for the three subsequent years.
Calhoun's SSS program, known as the "Emerging Scholars Program," is designed to increase the academic success of disadvantaged students by providing remedial and other special services for 175 students at the college. Services provided include tutoring/study skills, supplemental instruction, scheduling assistance, academic advising, transfer/placement assistance, personal counseling, grant aid, mentoring and cultural events. The program requires all participants to develop a Program Plan of Study (POPS), attend study skills sessions, engage in tutoring, participate in cultural events and have a minimum of three contacts with program staff each semester.
According to Calhoun President Marilyn Beck, the Student Support Services grant provides services for students, who by reason of their educational, cultural, economic background and/or physical disability, need such services to assist them in successfully completing their postsecondary education. Special emphasis is placed on freshman students who are enrolling with Calhoun for the first time.
Calhoun received its first Student Support Services grant in 2001. Since that time, participants of the program have included four of the college's "Top Ten Most Outstanding Students" and college leaders who serve as presidents of such Calhoun student organizations as the Student Government Association, Phi Theta Kappa, the Black Student Alliance, and The Centurion Club for students with disabilities.
