Calhoun Foundation Announces
Scholarship Application Deadline
The Calhoun Community College Foundation is now accepting applications for scholarships to be awarded for the 2005 fall semester. According to Foundation Executive Director Terri Bryson, "There are more than 100 opportunities for students to receive support for their college career through the generous contribution of Calhoun Foundation Benefactors."
Bryson added that many families are unaware of the STARS (Statewide Articulation Transfer and Reporting System) articulation agreement between two-year and four-year colleges which now guarantees that community college credit hours will transfer seamlessly toward a bachelor's degree at any state university if the student follows the course of study recommended for his or her major. "That means that upon graduation from Calhoun Community College , a student can be halfway toward a bachelor's degree.for half the cost," noted Bryson.
For students weighing tuition costs, the articulation agreement ensures there is no wiser use of limited family funds than to begin an educational career at a local community college. Since tuition at community colleges can be as much as ¼ that of other public institutions, it also means that every dollar a benefactor contributes to community colleges will go further and accomplish more than in any other educational setting.
In a recent speech at a Florida community college, President Bush reported that community colleges were the most flexible, adaptable and available educational resource in America . He added that unlike traditional universities, community colleges are able to swiftly make curriculum changes in order to meet real-world needs. The President challenged those in community leadership positions and those of financial means to participate in improving educational opportunities adding, "it is the responsibility of corporate America to work with community colleges to help people help themselves."
The Calhoun Foundation has a variety of scholarship awards available to help make college possible for more individuals. Some scholarship awards are based on achievement or community service. Other awards are made based on financial need, area of study, or unique factors such as: county of residence, high school attended, or parents' location of employment. Applications are available through a link to the Foundation's page on the Calhoun website: www.calhoun.edu . The deadline for applications is March 15.
These and other awards are made possible through private support of businesses and individuals making directed or endowed scholarships to ensure a future for others. Endowed scholarships, also called perpetual scholarships, funded by Calhoun Foundation donors, include endowments in the name of:
