Calhoun Community College to Celebrate
AMERICAN CONSTITUTION
and
CITIZENSHIP DAY
Calhoun Community College will celebrate American Constitution and Citizenship Day on Wednesday, September 14, 2005 with several activities. The celebration, entitled “Paying Tribute” begins at 9:00 a.m. in the Chasteen Student Center on the Decatur campus.
Special events include a tribute to the victims and families of 9/11 and members of the armed services. In addition, there will be special recognition given to the American Constitution and a celebration of American Citizenship Day. From 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon there will be a Community Service Volunteer Fair. At noon, the Student Government Association (SGA) will host a "Back-to-School" cookout in front of the Student Center.
A new Federal law designating the anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution (September 17) as Constitution and Citizenship Day, was inserted into a spending bill last fall by Sen. Robert C. Byrd, a Democrat of West Virginia. The law affects all educational institutions receiving federal funds. Events currently scheduled at colleges across the country are varied, and include panel discussions on the scope of constitutional rights, speeches by federal judges and political science professors, and student debates.
