Calhoun Community College Student
Receives National Honor
Calhoun Community College student Melanie Landers has been selected as a 2005 New Century Scholar by Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year colleges. As a New Century Scholar, Melanie is the highest scoring student from the state of Alabama in the All-USA Academic Team competition. For her honor, she will receive a $2,000 cash award, funded by the Coca-Cola Foundation and the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation.
A Computer Information Systems major with a perfect 4.0 grade point average, Melanie will graduate this spring from Calhoun and plans to transfer to Athens State University in the fall to obtain her bachelor's degree in Computer Science.
At Calhoun, Melanie is involved in numerous activities, including Phi Theta Kappa, the International Association of Administrative Professionals, and the Warhawks, Calhoun's student ambassadors. She also serves as coordinator of Calhoun's Service Learning program, which partners student volunteers with local non-profit agencies, and volunteers with Junior Achievement. Melanie has received a number of honors for her academic accomplishments, including being named the Most Outstanding Student in Office Administration (2004), Who's Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges , the President's List at Calhoun, and the National Dean's List.
"Melanie Landers is an excellent student, balancing school and family responsibilities while at the same time maintaining a 4.00 GPA," said Dr. Kermit Carter, Calhoun's Dean for Student Affairs. "As Dean of Students, I often have the opportunity to meet and work with many talented students. Melanie is just such a person - one who exemplifies the important qualities that should be inherent in a well-rounded, academically gifted student," Carter added. As a New Century Scholar, Melanie will be featured in the American Association of Community College's College Times and Phi Theta Kappa's Golden Key News Briefs.
