Calhoun Community College
Awarded ARC Grant
Calhoun Community College has been awarded $194,152 from the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) to equip two Nursing Skills Laboratories which will provide hands-on learning experiences for students pursuing careers as health professionals. At least 200 Calhoun nursing students will use the Nursing Skills Laboratories each semester for a total of 400 during the first full academic year that the equipment is available. The total project cost will be $411,252. In addition to the ARC grant, the state will contribute $149,100 and local businesses and individuals will provide $68,000 in donations.
The Nursing Skills Laboratory provides an area for nursing faculty to incorporate the skills component of theory instruction and demonstrate nursing skills in a practice hospital setting. Currently, Calhoun has one Nursing Skills Laboratory with limited hospital beds and mannequins available for specific skills practice such as intravenous arms, tracheotomy head and neck models, catheterization and intra-muscular practice models. ARC funds will enable the college to upgrade current equipment and to add an additional Nursing Skills Laboratory to provide hands-on practice in a comfortable learning environment. When complete, the equipment will be moved to the new Health Sciences building currently under construction on the Decatur campus.
