Saxophone Great Harvey Thompson Set to Perform
for Calhoun Honors Day Program
Noted
saxophonist Harvey L. Thompson will perform with the Calhoun Community College
Jazz Band during the college’s 35th Annual Honors Day Convocation,
scheduled for Friday, April 30, 2004, at 10:30 a.m., in the Kelley gym on
Calhoun’s Decatur campus.
Born in
Meridian, Mississippi, Thompson moved to Tuscaloosa at an early age, and
graduated from Druid City High School. Thompson received his formal education
from Tennessee State University, where he majored in music.
Inspired by the late virtuoso saxophonist John Coltrane, Thompson says that he
“enjoys music at all levels, from bluegrass to Beethoven.” A member of the
Muscle Shoals Horns, the only local horn section to play for all local recording
studios, Thompson has completed tours to London, Switzerland, Paris, Belgium,
and Scotland with such music greats as Elton John, Eddie Mitchell, the late John
Denver, and most recently Lyle Lovett. Thompson is also a member of Lovett’s
Large Band, and as such, has made television appearances on such programs as the
Grammy Awards, Austin City Limits, The Today Show, The Tonight Show, and David
Letterman.
The
owner of CETS Music Publishing Company, Thompson has recorded with such
musicians as Waylon Jennings, Rod Stewart, Hank Williams Jr., The Oak Ridge
Boys, Bobby Womack, Isaac Hayes, Dolly Parton, Alabama, James Brown, Steve
Winwood, Kris Kristofferson, Wayne Newton, the late Roy Orbison, and many more.
