Calhoun Community College to Offer
Full Tuition Scholarships for
CIS, Math, and Advanced Technology Majors
Beginning fall semester 2004, Calhoun Community College will offer full-tuition scholarships for students majoring in Computer Information Science, Math, Pre-engineering, and Advanced Technology (Aerospace Technology, Industrial Maintenance Technology, Machine Tool Technology, Process Technology, Design Drafting, Instrumentation, Air Conditioning/Refrigeration, and Advanced Electronics Manufacturing). Scholarships are limited to 40 students per year who meet the scholarship’s eligibility requirements.
Funding for the scholarships is being provided through a $400,000, four-year grant from the National Science Foundation for the college’s Computer Science, Mathematics and Technology (CMT) Academic Rewards Program. The program is designed to increase the number of well-prepared graduates in technology, computer specialities and mathematics by offering the annual scholarships and a variety of support activities.
The CMT is directed at capable, but financially disadvantaged students with special emphasis on recruiting students from among underrepresented groups such as female, minorities, or persons with disabilities. The program will “reward” those students who do well academically through financial awards and participation in enhanced, discipline-specific, support services.
To be eligible for the scholarships, students must meet the following criteria:
- Be a United States citizen, national, refugee alien, or permanent resident alien at the time of application;
- Be enrolled full-time each semester, with an identified major in computer information systems, mathematics, pre-engineering, or advanced technology;
- Demonstrated academic potential or ability defined as minimum 2.75 overall grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) in high school or postsecondary studies;
- Demonstrated financial need defined as Pell Grant eligibility;
- Demonstrated motivation, maturity and commitment to a CMT career; and
- Potential impact of the award on the student’s retention and success.
