Calhoun Community Students to Hear
Nationally-Recognized Motivational Speaker
Students enrolled this fall at Calhoun Community College are starting the year “on the road to student success” and will take part in a college-wide student success symposium planned for Thursday, September 17, 2009, from 11am – 1:00 pm. The program, sponsored by Cal houn's Student Affairs Office, will be held in the Kelley Gymnasium on the Decatur campus and broadcast live at the college's Huntsville /Cummings Research Park campus for students attending there.
Nationally-recognized motivational speaker Dennis Rahiim Watson will be the event's featured speaker. Watson, president and CEO of The Center for Black Student Achievement, has been ranked a s one of the top 50 motivational speakers in the nation and is often described as a cross between Bill Cosby, Jesse Jackson and Les Brown. Watson, who has spoken at colleges and universities around the country including Yale, Harvard, Howard , Kent State , Cornell, Morehouse, UCLA, Columbia , Hampton , Fisk, Vanderbilt, Brown, Stanford, University of Alaska , University' of California at Berkeley , Northwestern, University of Miami and Dalhousie University in Halifax , Nova Scotia , Canada, has received over 250 awards for his work with black youth nationwide, among them five White House citations.
According to Dr. Kermit Carter, dean for student affairs at Cal houn and organizer of the event, Watson will speak on the topic “No Excuses for a Lack of
Student Achievement in a Globally Competitive World.”
Topics to be addressed by Cal houn presenters will include promoting leadership, working toward graduation and empowerment. Information will also be provided on advising, ADA services, financial aid, service learning opportunities, developmental studies, the college's Student Support Services Emerging Scholars program and tutoring services.
“It is our intent through this symposium to provide information to our students on what Cal houn has to offer to support their success while at the college,” commented Carter. “We have over 11,000 students with us this fall, many of them first-time college students, so we planned this event to motivate and encourage them as they begin or continue their education journey with us,” Carter added.
