Calhoun Adult Ed Program Announces Cut in GED Test Fees for Students

Students interested in taking the GED test at Calhoun Community College and other Department of Education funded locations around the state may now qualify to take the test for half the previous testing fee.

The Alabama Adult Education and Family Literacy Plan has granted approval to the Alabama Community College System to use state appropriated adult education funds to help defray the cost of GED testing fees for adult education students in non-institutionalized settings.

“This news for our adult education students could not have come at a better time,” commented Calhoun Adult Education Director Chris Miller. “With so many people looking for jobs or looking to find a better job, any assistance we can provide to them I know is greatly appreciated,” Miller added.

Formerly, the test fee for individuals taking the GED test for the first time was $50.  The fee has been cut in half, and eligible students will now pay only $25 to take the test.  The remaining $25 will be paid from state appropriated adult education funding.

To be eligible to participate in this program, an adult education student must meet the following requirements:

  • be currently enrolled in a Department of Postsecondary Education-funded adult education program (GED Preparation class);
  • be pre-tested on an approved adult education assessment instrument (this test is given during GED preparation classes);
  • have received at least 30 clock hours of instruction (these can be made within a month);
  • be post-tested with an approved, parallel adult education assessment instrument (also given during GED preparation classes);
  • have attained a standard score of 500 or greater on each part of the Official GED Practice Test (Calhoun offers the Official Practice Test free each month at all class locations or wherever a student clocks his or her 30 hours of instruction) ; and
  • never have been administered the GED Test in whole or in part.

GED test prep classes are offered through Calhoun's Adult Education program on both the Decatur and Huntsville campuses and at a variety of locations throughout Madison , Morgan and Limestone counties. To meet growing demand, the program recently added 10 new instructional sites.
