Calhoun Marks Official Beginning of 2009-2010
Academic Year with Employee In-Service
Calhoun Community College faculty, staff and administration will officially kick-off the 2009-10 academic year on Tuesday, August 18, 2009, with the college’s annual fall In-Service program.
The event, to be held in the college’s Health Sciences Center on the Decatur campus, will begin with a welcome by Calhoun President Marilyn Beck at 8:30 am, followed by “Success Stories” from Calhoun alums Paul Compton, owner/president of Music Highway Writer Services and Lewis A. Eakins, CPP, Director Public Safety for Oakwood University. Beck will also introduce the college’s 35 new employees, who have been hired since last year’s In-service program. Dr. Mary Jane Caylor, member of the Alabama State Board of Education, will also provide greetings and comments during the program.
Keynote speaker for the event will be Dr. Jennifer Jones, director of student services at The University of Alabama, who will address the topic, “Creating a Climate for Student Success.”
“Calhoun’s institutional management plan is centered on student success, so we are all eager to hear Dr. Jones’ comments as we prepare for another outstanding year at Calhoun,” commented Beck. “And, if our early numbers are any indication, we are set for a record enrollment of over 10,000 credit students this fall,” Beck added.
Calhoun employees with five, ten, 15, 20, 25, 30 or more years of service will be recognized as part of the morning’s activities. Following lunch, a number of breakout sessions have been planned to include a presentation by Dr. James R. Brown, Calhoun adjunct instructor, who will speak on his experiences as manager of a mosquito control concern on two remote oil camp sites in Chad, Africa, and a session on robotics and 3-D modeling led by Calhoun instructors Mike Blizzard, Chris Gibbs and Mark Rose.
