Calhoun to Host Regional Professional Development
for Community College Employees
The Decatur campus of Calhoun Community College will be the site for the Third Biennial A-TEAM (Advancing Technology Education Awareness Motivation) Experience, scheduled for Thursday, March 6, 2008 from 9:00 a.m. – 2:45 p.m. A-TEAM began six years ago as a regional professional development for employees from Calhoun, Gadsden State and Wallace State-Hanceville community colleges and this year will also include employees from Drake State Technical College. Close to 1000 two-year college employees from the four institutions are expected to attend.
The day-long event will consist of dozens of seminars and workshops in such areas as safety and security on community college campuses, an update on FERPA (the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act), workforce development, health and wellness, increasing student success, review of OSHA standards, media training, and updates on various software packages. A number of specialized workshops will be conducted for faculty and staff from specific areas and disciplines.
According to event organizers, Alabama Community College system chancellor Bradley Byrne and Alabama State Board of Education member Dr. Mary Jane Caylor will make comments during the luncheon breaks.
“The A-TEAM experience began several years ago as a means to allow faculty, staff and administrators from Calhoun, Gadsden State and Wallace State the opportunity to share ideas, solve problems and just get to know one another,” commented Calhoun president Marilyn Beck. Each year, colleges throughout our system plan professional development activities for their respective campuses, but the A-TEAM event allows us to broaden our local scope and provides us with a shared pool of resources to bring in more regionally and nationally-known leaders in higher education,” Beck said
“We also are very pleased that our colleagues from our sister institution, Drake State Technical College, will join us for this year’s event,” added Beck.
