Calhoun Community College Presents 7th Annual Writers' Conference

Calhoun Community College, in partnership with the Princess Theatre, will present the Seventh Annual Writers’ Conference, Thursday, March 13, 2008, beginning at 9:00 am at Calhoun Community College’s Aerospace Training Center on the Decatur campus.  An event also featuring this year’s authors will be held at 7:00 pm on March 13 at the Princess Theatre in Decatur.

Featured writers for this year’s conference are Roy Hoffman and John Sledge.  Hoffman is the author of Almost Family, winner of the Lillian Smith Award for fiction, and Back Home: Journeys Through Mobile. A native of Mobile, Alabama, he worked in New York City for twenty years as a journalist, speechwriter, editor, and teacher, before returning South as writer-in-residence at the Mobile Register, where he is now on staff. His essays and reviews have appeared in The New York Times, Esquire, Oxford American and other publications. Hoffman's Chicken Dreaming Corn has been praised by Harper Lee as, "A story of great appeal in prose lean and clean."
sledge Sledge is Book Editor of the Mobile Press Register and writes a weekly column for the paper.  Actively involved in the preservation of the architecture and history of Mobile, Sledge is an architectural historian with the Mobile Historic Development Commission, a department of the City of Mobile.  Sledge is also a contributing editor of book reviews for the American Center for Artists, an electronic magazine that focuses on the biography and autobiography of famous and emerging writers, painters, sculptors, musicians, and other artists.  He lives in Fairhope.

Both events are open to the public.  Admission to the event at Calhoun is free to all who attend.  Admission to the Princess Theatre event is $10.00 for the general public; $5.00 for K-12 teachers and students (school I.D. required); and free to Calhoun faculty, staff, and students (Calhoun I.D. required).
