Calhoun Announces New Academic Deans

Calhoun Community College President Marilyn Beck has announced the addition of four new deans to the college.  The new positions are the result of the restructuring of Calhoun’s acacdemic and technology divisions and the recent retirements of two former division chairs.  National searches were conducted to fill each post.

The new deans are Kenneth Anderson, humanities and social sciences division; Bethany Clem, business/computer information systems, technologies and workforce development division; Jimmy Duke, math and natural sciences division; and J. Bret McGill, health division.

Clem comes to Calhoun from the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education in Montgomery, where she most recently worked as director of career and technical education for the past year. She also served as education administrator for the Alabama Department of Education for five years.

She graduated from The University of Tennessee and earned her master’s degree in education from Alabama A&M University.  Clem began her educational career as a drafting and design instructor at Drake State Technical College in 1988, serving until 2002, when she moved to the Alabama Department of Education.  She also owned two architectural design companies.

A member of the Calhoun faculty since 1987, Duke most recently served as chair of the college’s health and natural sciences division and distance education coordinator.  A graduate of Auburn University, where he received both bachelor’s and master’s degrees, he also worked as a science instructor with Wallace State Community College –Selma prior to joining Calhoun.  While at Calhoun, Duke has co-authored several grants, including a $2.5 million award from the U.S. Department of Labor which has resulted in expanded healthcare education opportunities for area students.

McGill currently serves as assistant dean of instruction and chair of the health studies division at Northwest-Shoals Community College (NWSCC) . He also worked as extended day coordinator and director of the emergency medicine program at NWSCC and previously served as an adjunct instructor at Calhoun.  A licensed paramedic, he has worked for the Athens Limestone Hopsital Ambulance Service and Huntsville Hospital Medflight.  McGill received his associate’s degree from Calhoun and holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Faulkner University in Montgomery.

“As we begin our 2008-09 academic year here at Calhoun, the announcement of our four new deans certainly adds to the excitement a new year brings,” commented Beck.  “They bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the college and will be invaluable assets to Calhoun as we continue to serve the growing education and training demands of the north Alabama area,” Beck added.

According to Beck, Anderson, Clem and Duke have already begun their new duties. McGill is expected to start at the college on Monday, September 8.
