Calhoun Community College Offering Full Tuition Scholarships for CIS, Math, and Advanced Technology Majors

Calhoun Community College is now accepting applications for full-tuition scholarships for students majoring or planning to major in Computer Information Science, Math, Pre-Engineering, and Advanced Technology (Aerospace Technology, Industrial Maintenance Technology, Machine Tool Technology, Process Technology, Design Drafting, Instrumentation, Air Conditioning -Refrigeration, and Advanced Electronics Manufacturing). Incoming students (freshmen, transfer, re-admission), as well as current students who plan to attend Calhoun this summer, may apply for the scholarships.

According to Calhoun President Marilyn Beck, over $32,000 in scholarship money is currently available through the Computer Science, Mathematics and Technology (CMT) grant program.  “For current or potential students interested in pursuing a career in computer science, math, pre-engineering or one of the technologies, this scholarship program is an excellent opportunity for them to have much of their educational costs paid while preparing for a career in one of several high-paying fields,” commented Beck.

The CMT Academic Rewards Program is directed at capable, but financially disadvantaged students with special emphasis on recruiting students from underrepresented groups such as female, minorities, or persons with disabilities. The program will "reward" those students who do well academically through financial awards and participation in enhanced, discipline-specific, support services.

Funding for the scholarships is provided through a grant awarded to Calhoun from the National Science Foundation. The scholarship program is designed to increase the number of well-prepared graduates in technology, computer specialties and mathematics by offering the annual scholarships and a variety of support activities.

To be eligible for the scholarships, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a United States citizen, national, refugee alien, or permanent resident alien at the time of application;
  • Be enrolled full-time each semester, with an identified major in computer information systems, mathematics, pre-engineering, or advanced technology;
  • Demonstrated academic potential or ability defined as a minimum 2.75 overall grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) in high school or postsecondary studies;
  • Demonstrated financial need defined as Pell Grant eligibility;
  • Demonstrated motivation, maturity and commitment to a CMT career; and
  • Potential impact of the award on the student's retention and success.

Application deadline is March 1, 2008.  For more information or to apply, contact Dr. Lynn Hogan at 256/306-2672 or by email at dch@calhoun.edu or visit the Calhoun Community College website at www.calhoun.edu and click on the Scholarship icon.
