Calhoun Students Selected to Represent College on
All-Alabama Academic Team
The Alabama Community College System recently honored 48 two-year college students from the state as members of the 2008 All-Alabama Academic team. A banquet at Birmingham’s Wynfrey Hotel was the forum for recognizing these outstanding students for their selection. Among those students honored were two students representing Calhoun Community College; Dorothy Laquinn Richey and Brittany Scott.
A General Education major from Hartselle, Alabama, Richey is a member of Phi Theta Kappa and works full-time for Calhoun as secretary to the Student Support Services Emerging Scholars program. This is Laquinn’s third year as one of Calhoun’s Top Ten students, and she was one of two students from the college nominated for the 2008 All-USA Academic Team. Her goal is to help the students involved in her program “know that someone believes in them and that they have someone to turn to for encouragement.” Her GPA is 3.9.
Scott is an Elementary Education major from Decatur, Alabama. She is a member of Phi Theta Kappa, Sigma Kappa Delta, Baptist Campus Ministries, and the Student Government Association. She joined Richey as the other Calhoun student nominated for the 2008 All-USA Academic Team. Scott says that her goal is to transfer to and graduate from Athens State University and eventually teach second grade students. Her GPA is 3.8.
The students were honored before an audience of almost 400 that included their parents and families and college presidents, deans, and faculty from throughout the Alabama Community College System (ACCS), as well as representatives from several universities. Representing 25 colleges within the system, they were recognized for their academic achievement and distinguished leadership.
“Excellence in whatever you choose to do in your life will make you stand out, and excellence is what will make each and every one of you a leader in your field and in your communities. We need good leaders,” ACCS Chancellor Bradley Byrne told the honorees. “Good leaders work hard and distinguish themselves by the quality of who they are as human beings and what they know they can do through the power of intellect.”
The Alabama College System’s All-Alabama Academic Team Recognition Program was established in 1995 as an enhancement to the All-USA National Academic Team Recognition Program, sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, the American Association of Community Colleges, and USA Today. Since the beginning of the All-USA Academic Team recognition, Calhoun has an unprecedented seven students honored nationally. Honorees must possess a minimum grade point average of 3.25, be involved in campus activities, and have completed a minimum of 12 semester hours.
