MUSIC EDUCATION

Performance Opportunities

Exceptional ensembles offer training and experience in performing and studying the finest musical literature. The Chorale is internationally recognized for its superior choral performances on annual concert tours. Other ensembles at the college include the following:

  • Calhoun ChoraleThe Calhoun Chorale is the premier mixed ensemble (SATB) at the college and has between 16 and 40 members. Though vocal music majors and minors are required to participate, all other students are welcome. This ensemble performs music of all periods and gives performances throughout the year at various events. Permission of instructor and audition required.   • The Calhoun Connection is the jazz ensemble at the college. This ensemble has between 9 and 16 members. Currently the group focuses on ballads and other standards, but is sometimes a show choir, depending on personnel and demand. The men of this group also sing as a TTBB ensemble.   • Madrigal Singers is a small mixed ensemble (SATB) of select students that focuses on a cappella music of the Renaissance, Baroque and Modem periods. Students are chosen for this ensemble based on musicianship, blend and work ethic. Participation in Chorale required for participation in this ensemble.   • The Guitar Ensemble is an advanced group of guitarists who perform at many functions in the community as well as at Calhoun. Students are expected to be proficient on the guitar. Permission of instructor required for participation in this ensemble. For more information, contact Marguarita de Quesada at (256) 306-2697.
  • The Piano Ensemble is a group of between 3 and 6 pianists who perform on campus and throughout the community. Literature of various periods is presented in a variety of venues. Permission of instructor and audition required for participation in this ensemble. For more information, contact Pam Miller at (256) 306-2586.
  • The Jazz BandThe Jazz Band is the instrumental ensemble on campus. Though a requirement instrumental majors and minors, all students are welcome to join. Permission of instructor and audition required for participation in this ensemble. For more information, contact Jimmy Cantrell at (256) 306-2692 or e-mail at jec@calhoun.edu.
  • Class Voice, Class Piano I and II, and Fretted Instruments I, II and III are prerequisites for applied lessons. Students who have taken private lessons before and read music with some level of proficiency are encouraged to audition and register for private lessons.
