WebCT Learning Platform
Information Page

The course in which you are enrolled requires that you use WebCT for class communication and course completion. WebCT is a learning platform, housed on a Calhoun server, which facilitates communication, instructor bulletins, online calendar, and courseware.

Follow the directions below to access and begin to use WebCT as you participate in your class:

  • Click Logon to My WebCT.
  • Click in the username area. Your username is your student id. Be sure to enter any leading zeros in your student id. Your student id can be found on your registration slip. It must contain 7 digits. It is not your social security number.
  • Click in the password area. Your password is your last name, with the first letter capitalized and other letters in lower case. Type your last name exactly as you normally would--for example, if your last name is "McDaniel," your password is "McDaniel."
  • You will find yourself at the "My WebCT" page, where all WebCT classes in which you are enrolled are displayed. Each class is a link. Click on any class to proceed to the class home page.
  • At the home page, you should see several icons, including Calendar, Discussions (or Communicate), and Mail. You might also see Courseware (or Contents), Quiz, and other links.
  • Click Discussions to view any bulletins posted by your instructor. In that area, you will find class information, including class procedure and assignments. Check the Discussions area first, and make it a habit to check it at least twice each week. You may post discussions, and may be asked to do so by your instructor. Click Compose Message, fill in the message area, and click Post. You may reply or reply privately to any posted message.
  • At the Mail area, you can read and send mail. The mail system is closed, which means that you can only communicate with other instructors and students in WebCT. To send an e-mail message, click Compose Mail Message. Click the Browse button beside the Send To area. Scroll through the list of student names to find the intended receiver. Click that name and click Done. Complete your message and click Send. To send an attachment, click the Browse button beside the Attach area. Maneuver along the disk structure to find the intended file. Double-click the file. In a few seconds (or minutes), the file name will appear as an attachment. At that point, you may send your message as you normally would.
  • Check the Calendar for a list of events and possible due dates or checkpoints. You may post calendar entries, as well, but your postings will be private, which means that only you can see them.
  • The Courseware or Contents area may or may not appear with your class. If it does, clicking it will take you directly to the course content. Courseware will approximate what you find in your text, but will likely include some interactive sections and possibly online exams. Your instructor will let you know how to deal with the Courseware section.
  • If a Quiz icon is included, it is the entry to online exams. While some online quizzes may be included in the Courseware area, major exams (if any) will be placed in the Quiz area. To take an exam, click Quiz, click the exam that you wish to complete, and follow all subsequent directions.

Your instructor can track your progress and logons, so be sure to logon regularly. Make a note of your instructor's phone number and Calhoun e-mail address so that you can communicate any difficulty with accessing the WebCT site.
