Barbering

The Barbering Certificate program at Calhoun provides a curriculum which includes theory, skills, and shop ethics required to become a licensed barber. Students practice techniques in a supervised shop setting incl uding hairstyling, hair cutting, and chemical services. Computer instructional materials also are utilized for tutorial and testing reviews. Classes are available on a full-time or part-time basis. Certification typically requires three semesters of full-time attendance. The Barbering program at Calhoun requires 1350 contact hours. The curriculum is a certificate program which prepares students for immediate employment in the profession of barbering (see Barbering Core Requirements).
Career Opportunities in the Field
Barbering is a growing and challenging field in which professionals may choose one of several careers, including any of the following:
- Licensed Barber - trained in the science of haircutting, hair styling, chemical services, shop ethics, and has passed a licensing examination in the county of operation
- Platform Artist - licensed barber who demonstrates the latest fashion techniques to sh
ops and operators
- Manufacturer’s Representative - employed by product manufacturer to educate barbers and cosmetologists in proper application of new products
- Shop Manager/Owner - licensed barber with overall operation or ownership of a shop
- Instructor - licensed barber with related work and teaching experience who instructs students in barbering
Barbers and cosmetologists hold about 750,000 jobs. Part-time jobs attract many people who want to combine a job with family, school or other responsibilities.
Barbers salaries may come from a variety of sources, depending on training and desire. Those working for commission can expect salaries at around the 60% area, while teachers and representatives earn annual salaries. Those individuals desiring to pursue the entrepreneurial side of the business have unlimited earning potential.
Relocation
The Barbering program has a brand new facility located in Building 26. The new facility provides students with new state-of-the art equipment and classroom facilities. Clients enjoy the improved lighting and aethestically pleasing environment.
