April 7 – 15, 2012, marks the 3rd Annual National Robotics Week, and the Alabama Robotics Technology Park (RTP-Alabama) will join the national celebration with an Open House of its state-of the-art facilities on April 17, 2012. School and public tours of Phase I and Phase II are scheduled for 3:00, 4:00, and 5:00 pm, at the park located across from Calhoun Community College’s Decatur Campus. Tours will include line demonstrations of robots in action. Reservations for tours are not required, but strongly advised. You may reserve your space by calling 256.642.2600 or 256.642.2610.
RTP-Alabama is a collaboration between the state, Calhoun Community College, Alabama Industrial Development & Training (AIDT), and robotics industry leaders from across the nation. Phase I of the park is the Robotic Maintenance Training Center, a 52,000 square foot facility housing an industry training program staffed by technical experts from several major robotic and automation brands. Phase II is the Advanced Technology Research and Development Center, designed for use by companies developing robotic technology. It features the infrastructure to support research, development and tesing of leading edge robotics for military projects, space exploration, and manufacturing processes. In addition to the 30,000 square foot building, an added feature is the outdoor test track that provides tenents with space to field-test their robotic and unmanned prototypes.
National Robotics Week recognizes robotics technology as a pillar of 21st American innovation, highlighting its growing importance in a wide variety of application areas, and emphasizes technology education. According to its website, the annual celebration promotes the United States as a leader in robotics technology development, and works to educate the public about the importance of robotics technology in today’s society while advocating increased funding for robotic technology research and development.
